World Meteorological Day

Each year, on 23 March, the World Meteorological Organization, its 188 Members and the worldwide meteorological community celebrate World Meteorological Day.

This Day commemorates the entry into force, on that date in 1950, of the WMO Convention creating the Organization. Subsequently, in 1951, WMO was designated a specialized agency of the United Nations System.

"Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it." (popularly attributed to Mark Twain, 1835-1910)

What can be done is to provide information that allows people to take advantage of the weather and minimize its harmful effects.

The theme for this years World Meterorological Day is Weather, climate and the air we breathe.
